Istanbul has more historic mosques than anyone can see in one trip. This guide helps you choose — and understand what you are looking at. Fifteen centuries of architecture, two shores, one pocket atlas.

72 profiles

Dates, architect, patron, dome span, height, minarets — and what makes each building notable. Every photograph is credited. Search by name, district or era; filter by European or Asian side, dome size and period.

On the site: the map and the mosque pages.

A map with 2,350 markers

A map of Istanbul that marks not only the mosques with profiles but every other mosque in the city, including the ones people walk past without looking up.

Fifteen walking routes

A route is one connected walk on one side of the city. Each one gives its starting point, the window between prayers when the mosques are open to visitors, the distance along the streets, and the point where you can stop early if you get tired.

On the site: The Heart of Sultanahmet walk.

The Sinan Tree and domes to scale

Mimar Sinan’s Istanbul mosques in chronological order, grouped into his own apprentice, journeyman and master periods, so the family resemblance between their plans is easy to see. Ten major domes are drawn to the same scale, from Hagia Sophia to modern Çamlıca.

On the site: the Sinan Tree and the dome chart.

From Hagia Sophia to the back streets

The atlas includes the imperial monuments — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Süleymaniye, Fatih, Eyüp Sultan — and small neighbourhood mosques: Rüstem Pasha above the bazaar, Şemsi Pasha on the Üsküdar waterfront, the tekke of Koca Mustafa Pasha. Byzantine churches converted into mosques, the Balyan family’s baroque and the modern mosques of the Bosphorus are here too.

Offline by design

The map, photographs and all the text are stored in the app, so it works in the street with no signal and no roaming. Only Google Maps directions and links to sources need a connection.

Free and paid

The whole guide is free: 72 profiles with their full text and photographs, the map, the Sinan Tree, the dome chart. Marking a mosque as visited and adding your own photos are free too. Two routes are open in full; a single purchase, with no subscription, unlocks the other thirteen.
